Skoda’s EV Plans for India: 7-Seater Peaq SUV and Affordable Locally Developed Electric Car in the Pipeline

Skoda Auto and Volkswagen are preparing to expand their presence in India’s electric and hybrid vehicle segments as part of their long-term mobility strategy. Both automakers are expected to introduce their first electric vehicles in India during the current fiscal year, while hybrid models are likely to arrive by 2028.

Although Skoda Auto India has not officially confirmed its future EV lineup for the country, industry reports suggest that the company’s plans include the upcoming Skoda Peaq electric SUV and a locally developed mass-market electric vehicle tailored specifically for Indian consumers.

Skoda Peaq Expected as Flagship Electric SUV

The Skoda Peaq is set to become the largest model in the company’s global portfolio and is expected to be positioned as a flagship electric SUV. The vehicle is scheduled to make its global debut on June 23, 2026.

While the company has not revealed a specific India launch timeline, a Skoda executive recently indicated that the automaker intends to bring its global product portfolio to India in the coming year, raising expectations for the Peaq’s arrival in the domestic market.

The SUV will serve as the production version of the Skoda Vision 7S Concept, which was showcased during the Auto Expo. Official design sketches reveal a modern styling approach featuring slender T-shaped LED headlamps connected by a light bar, a Volcano-inspired front bumper design, and Skoda’s new gloss-black Tech Deck face.

Additional exterior highlights include:

  • High shoulder line design
  • Wide and muscular D-pillars
  • Flush-fitting door handles
  • T-shaped LED taillamps connected by a lighting element
  • Large SUV proportions with seven-seat configuration

The Peaq is expected to strengthen Skoda’s premium electric vehicle portfolio and compete in the growing large electric SUV segment.

Locally Developed EV Under India 2.0 Strategy

Alongside its global EV offerings, Skoda is also working on a locally developed electric vehicle under its India 2.0 strategy. The project aims to create an affordable electric car designed specifically for the Indian mass market.

Skoda currently offers several electric models in international markets, including the Citigoe iV battery electric hatchback, which is powered by an 83 bhp electric motor and delivers a driving range of approximately 225–274 kilometres on a single charge.

The company is also expanding its global EV lineup with products such as the Skoda Enyaq electric SUV. However, both the Citigoe iV and Enyaq are considered less suitable for India due to higher costs and limited mass-market appeal.

Localization Key to Competitive Pricing

To make electric vehicles more accessible to Indian buyers, Skoda is expected to focus heavily on component localization. Increasing local sourcing and manufacturing capabilities will be essential for reducing production costs and achieving competitive pricing in the highly price-sensitive Indian automotive market.

Company officials have already indicated that the locally developed EV remains some years away from launch, suggesting that the project is currently in the development phase.

As India’s electric vehicle market continues to expand, Skoda’s dual strategy of introducing premium global EVs alongside an affordable locally engineered model could help the brand strengthen its position in one of the world’s fastest-growing automotive markets.
