Jindal Stainless (Hisar) Limited (JSHL) has been awarded the First Prize at the prestigious ‘Global Environment Awards 2020′ in the ‘Platinum’ category. Instituted in 2010, the Global Environment Awards recognise outstanding contribution by individuals as well organisations in the field of sustainable environmental practices. The virtual award ceremony was organised on December 16 by the Energy and Environment Foundation. The event was inaugurated by Hon’ble Union Minister for Jal Shakti, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. Other dignitaries present at the event included Minister of Foreign Affairs, Australia, Senator Hon Marise Payne; Minister of Resources, Australia, Hon Keith Pitt; Secretary, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Mr U P Singh, and Australian High Commission in India, Mr Barry O’Farrell.
Commenting on this achievement, Director, Jindal Stainless (Hisar) Ltd., Mr Jagmohan Sood said, “JSHL is committed to sustainable manufacturing and is seamlessly optimising its energy consumption at the Hisar facility. The Company has significantly increased its use of environment-friendly bio-fuel, as part of its total thermal energy consumption, by a margin of 157% in the last two years. As a business philosophy, we believe that environment is a key stakeholder in our industry. This award is a testimony to our efforts in this direction.”
In its pursuit of sustainable business, JSHL has undertaken several steps. The Company has successfully reduced its Specific Energy Consumption (SEC) by 6.3% in the last three years. Consequentially, JSHL has been successful in reducing its carbon footprint by 16,674 tonnes in the last three years. Apart from this, the Company undertook major initiatives aimed at reducing traditional energy consumption. These include replacement of conventional lights with LED lights, installation of high efficiency water pumps, and adoption of a 650 kW rooftop solar PV system. These steps have helped the Company reap benefits like clean energy, zero CO2 emission, and annual power generation of 8.5 lacs kWh. All these efforts led to JSHL becoming the first stainless steel plant in India to receive the ISO 50001:2018 certification.
